Do you think the 5 points for 10% spell power is worth not having the extra damage reduction on mana shield? The 10% spell power doesn't seem to be that great for damage investment, while the shield helps a lot for group farming

At tier one gear level, you have about 300 spell power. That puts the 10% spell power buff at +30, which is on part with purple tier 1 piece of loot. So for 5 talents u get an extra armor piece worth of spell power to all spells.
Buffing shield gets you 90 out or so points of preventive healing on a long cool down. Sheild is a great spell, but when you are taking 1500-2000 points of damage that 95 isn't super important. Sheild talent is useful for getting deeper into to the ice tree, but loses to the spell power buff in a fair fight.
In my opinion. That said mathematically u need to take the spell power buff to get deeper into the fire tree anyways, so this becomes a trade off question of something deeper in the fire tree. Either way, 30-50 points of spell power is the truth.

That's a good way to put it, comparing to another piece of equipment. Is there any calculator online (haven't found one personal) that coverts spell power into real damage? Right now I have 297 SP, ~30 just feels kinda low. What kind of spell power does an epic t2 geared mage get?
I thought the extra shield absorb was higher than that... 95 damage is pretty weak too. I've pretty much always had it on my build, so I don't know personally how little of a difference it makes.
My build is basically exactly like your PVE fire build, with 5 points in shield instead of the spell power (which I will probably respect to try out) and 3 points in improved icebolt instead of the +spell hit %, for the off chance I need to use icebolt, and that I am always at 100% spell hit otherwise.

I have 458 unbuffed, but a monk adds 50 when you are in a dungeon, so 508 in a dungeon setting. Actually I have the talent so those numbers are 110% of my natural.
You can check the value of the sheild absorb yourself, just open spells tab and check what the shield absorbs and add 10%.
if you are hit capped, yeah, you take snaring frost bolt, yes. Its semi lame tho except in daily questing.

Ah, I was thinking the 950 absorb was updated to include the extra 20% (talent shows 5/5 is 20% boost, is it actually 10%?) instead of not updating at all.
Upgraded shield should be 1140, which the extra 190 probably doesn't make a difference at all in boss encounters, and would be nice only in certain circumstances.
You've won me over, I'll have to try out the extra spell power and see.

I believe the 20% is correct, but yes the additional spell power will be far more useful.
