In this post, I’ll cover how to maintain your mana.
TL;DR: major mana 50%, exquisite mana 25%, DB 5% if monk, rinse and repeat
Running out of mana means wipes if you are healing or dps'ing. When healing you will frequently burn through your mana without wanting to, and you should always be burning through mana as fast as reasonably possible as dps (I may cover this in later discussions, but there are spells with better mana to damage rates than others, and mastering them will determine your spell rotation and maximize your dps). The key to mana conservation is spending the cash, taking the time to perfect your rotation, and carefully monitoring your mana.
All mana users should carry both major [level 45, 0.75g a stack] and exquisite mana potions [level 55, 5g a stack]. They share an initial cooldown, but have separate actual cooldowns (you should also carry exquisite health potions, but that’s another issue). But having 4-5 stacks of each of these is not the only thing you have to do.
You will need to learn a rotation that works for you, but here is mine; it should be enough to get you started. At 50% mana, pop a major mana potion. Burn mana again until around 25% and then pop an exquisite mana potion. Mana potions should ideally get you back up to 90% mana when you use them. If you wait too long, you might not be able to cast it fast enough during a crunch and if you pop it too early, you might not gain all that valuable mana.
For monks, there is an additional step after this. You can use Divine Breath (DB) on yourself. This should be done as you approach 0 (5% or less). While this has a longer cooldown than potions (and is free), it should still be used second. Using 2 potions, DB, and then 2 potions is not unheard of and will provide more mana back that
Rinse and repeat. If you maintain this order throughout boss fights, you should be able to keep your healing or damage steady. Unless you are a healer and everyone is topped off, you should never be sitting around conversing mana by not using spells! As you gear up, this will become less important, but knowing how to properly utilize every point of mana can keep your team going just a little further for a little longer.
